Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA) & Radiesse®: A Regenerative Approach to Skin Quality and Facial Contouring

More than a filler: understanding calcium hydroxylapatite

At Clinique Mediluxe, we believe aesthetic medicine is not simply about adding volume. It is about understanding anatomy, skin quality, facial structure and how tissues change over time.

One of the treatments we use in selected patients is calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA), available in Canada as Radiesse®.

Unlike traditional hyaluronic acid fillers, Radiesse® has a unique composition and mechanism of action. It can provide an immediate structural effect while also stimulating a longer-term tissue response through collagen and elastin production.

This makes calcium hydroxylapatite particularly interesting for patients who want to improve skin quality, firmness, definition and overall tissue support, rather than simply adding volume.

What is calcium hydroxylapatite?

Calcium hydroxylapatite is a mineral naturally found in the human body, including in bone.

Radiesse® consists of calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres suspended in a gel carrier. When appropriately injected, the product can provide immediate correction while the calcium hydroxylapatite particles gradually stimulate a regenerative response in the treated tissues.

Over time, the carrier is absorbed while the body's own collagen-producing processes contribute to the longer-term result.

The objective is not to create an overfilled appearance.

It is to support the tissues and improve the quality and architecture of the skin.

What do we use Radiesse® for at Clinique Mediluxe?

Treatment is always individualized according to anatomy, skin quality and the patient's goals.

Depending on the patient and indication, calcium hydroxylapatite may be considered for:

  • Improving skin firmness and elasticity

  • Improving skin quality and texture

  • Supporting facial contours

  • Enhancing definition of selected areas

  • Improving the appearance of laxity

  • Restoring structural support in appropriate areas

  • Treating selected areas of the face, neck, décolleté and hands

Radiesse® can also be used in different dilution or preparation strategies depending on the clinical objective.

The treatment is therefore much more nuanced than simply asking, “Where should we inject filler?”

The better question is:

What does this patient's tissue actually need?

The Mediluxe approach: signature blended techniques

At Clinique Mediluxe, we have developed our own approach to regenerative injectable treatments that we refer to as our signature blended techniques.

Rather than viewing each injectable product in isolation, we consider how different components may complement one another within a carefully designed treatment plan.

In selected cases, Radiesse® may be prepared using a customized preparation or combination approach with additional components chosen according to the patient's skin quality, treatment area and desired outcome.

These techniques are individualized and performed according to our medical judgment and established clinical protocols.

The goal is not to create a more complicated treatment.

It is to create a more thoughtful one.

Why technique matters

The product is only one part of the equation.

The final result depends on understanding anatomy, tissue planes, injection technique, product characteristics, dilution, placement and patient selection.

Two practitioners can use the same product and achieve very different outcomes.

At Mediluxe, our philosophy has always been:

Craft first. Then art.

We focus on precision, anatomy and restraint before aesthetics.

Who may be a candidate?

Calcium hydroxylapatite may be appropriate for patients who are beginning to notice changes in skin quality, firmness or facial definition, as well as for patients looking to maintain tissue quality as they age.

It is not appropriate for everyone.

During a consultation, our medical team evaluates your anatomy, medical history, skin quality and expectations before determining whether Radiesse® — or another treatment is appropriate.

Sometimes the best recommendation is a different treatment.

And sometimes, it is no treatment at all.

A regenerative philosophy

At Clinique Mediluxe, we believe the future of aesthetic medicine is moving beyond simply replacing what has been lost.

It is increasingly about supporting tissue quality, stimulating the body's own regenerative processes and preserving natural facial architecture over time.

Calcium hydroxylapatite is one of the tools we use within that broader philosophy.

Not because every patient needs it.

But because, in the right patient and in the right hands, it can be an exceptionally versatile treatment.
